Of Skin and Stars

Although I admire photographers and artists who have a passion and eye for detail in capturing the human body, I’ve never been very interested in anatomical studies for myself. But recently I’ve felt inspired to photograph my skin and body, particularly the spatterings of moles, the patterns of hair follicles and the shape of tendons beneath the skin – completely new ground for me. For some time now, I’ve also been thinking about incorporating slivers of the human figure into my paintings, and doing extremely large, detailed pencil drawings on paper with several figures. It’s in my mind, I just don’t feel I’m in the right place for those pieces yet. I may not actually get to the work for another 4 years (I’m still working on ideas I thought of in 2002), I believe these photographs are the sprouts of something new.
