Photos are by m’ mate Jerry, one of my fave art buddies ever. We both share a love of contemporary pop-surrealism, the practices of portraiture, painting, photography and graphic design, black & white ephemera, and electronic musical tastes.

These images were shot in a basement in downtown Tucson on January 15, 2010, as notated by gCal, which serves as my diary (5th generation grandchildren, take note).

I was finishing one of the last of the colorbars paintings, working directly from my computer screen. On a whim, I decided to fire up photobooth and shoot a video of me painting (I’m always firing up photobooth on whims!). I was hoping to get the painting on the desk in the frame since I thought that’d be more interesting, but the screen wouldn’t tilt down far enough. When I played it back, I was surprised at how much my face changed once I started painting: the muscles relaxed, the eyes softened from tense, sort of brooding and intense, to – and here’s a word I don’t use often – peaceful.

Thru A Scanner

The theme for this month’s 27 project was “Portraits.” After being in front of the camera twice in the last couple of weeks, I actually didn’t feel like attempting any self-portraits. (Can you believe it?!) I turned my cheap HP scanner on its side and scanned my friends and dog in. I’m calling this method scannerotype because like a daguerreotype, the subject has to sit still for about a minute while it scans. I’m really happy with how these turned out.

If there was ever a Cindy Sherman Idol, I would totally be into that. But really, what’s the point of the self-portrait? I mean, what’s the effing point? Our ancestor artist-shamans painted vales full of game. Historical mythology brought us images of gods, saints/bodhisattvas/hench(wo)men, heaven, hell, the in-between. Then I recall Albrecht Dürer’s lifelong self-portraiture beginning at age 13 (he seemed to idealize himself, rather than document, like Rembrandt). Are myspace and sexting money shots the latest incarnation of the West’s individualistic cargo cult that began in the Renaissance? I am thinking of art history, idealization, documentary, illustration.
